After their apartment building caught fire in Racine on Monday morning, residents are wondering what will happen next. Fire destroyed many of the units and much of roof.
The American Red Cross is helping many residents find shelter in the Grace Church of Racine.
Earle Brown explained that he had lost all the items in his apartment.
Brown is one of the 30 or so residents who were displaced by a devastating apartment fire.
Brown said, “I was just getting out of the bath, undressed and an alarm went off. I didn’t know where to go and so I dressed myself backward.”
The cause of the fire is not known, according to the Racine Fire Department. The flames did cause damage worth $750,000.
They let me into the apartment. It was total destruction. “I’m standing in water inches deep, walking on walls that are dripping with water. I am at the furthest distance from the fire so you can only imagine how badly the apartment is near it.”
The fire department reports that the roof is heavily damaged, with a large portion of the material destroyed.
Brown: “I’m not sure what started that black fire, but I knew it was dangerous.”
He expressed his happiness that everyone had made it home safely. The American Red Cross, he said, has helped them navigate the disaster.
Brown said, “Everyone is now in a more calm state of mind. Yesterday, everyone was scattered and worried about what would happen. They were wondering what we’d do.
I was told that people cannot be replaced but items.
It’s a blessing to be alive and healthy.
Staying positive is the best way to handle this situation, he says.
Smiles are always better than frowns. “I know that it is a terrible situation, but being depressed will only keep you depressed.”
Red Cross officials are working on determining what comes next for the residents.
Jennifer Warren, with the American Red Cross, explained that “Right Now we only provide shelter. We do work with different property managers to see what arrangements they have for housing.”
