Melbourne’s grandmother was lucky to survive after the ceiling of her bedroom collapsed on her as she slept.
After the collapse of the roof at St Albans, in the north-west part of the city at 5:30 am the 90-year old was trapped under plaster and insulation.
The woman’s grandmother Teresa told 9News that her mother heard an audible crash. Teresa did not want to reveal the last name of this person.
She said, “The roof has collapsed. Grandma is trapped inside.”
Grandma was screaming, “Help me! Help me!”
Teresa’s mother and Teresa couldn’t get into the bedroom and they called for help.
Within minutes the emergency services arrived, equipped with bolt cutters and a ladder.
Grandma was rescued without a single scratch.
The plaster pieces that struck her caused a slight soreness on the neck.
After her amazing escape, the family joked that they should buy a lotto ticket.
Family members are still uncertain what led to the collapse. However, they had seen a crack on the ceiling just the day prior.
Theresa explained, “We did not see any watermarks, or anything of the sort, but only a small crack on one corner. That’s why yesterday we contacted insurance.”
From the outside, it is hard to see anything.
The family says they are too concerned to remain in their home until the insurance assessors have a chance to look.
