Fort Lauderdale firefighters, who saved a woman stuck in a wheel chair 31 floors up after a TikTok video went viral, are sharing their experience.
We told you Tuesday about Haleigh’s story. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was called in when floodwaters caused her elevator to be shut down.
The crew will dress up, oxygen tanks and all, to complete a circuit of 20 flights, followed by dinner. They were finishing up their workout on Sunday when the viral high-rise call came in.
Rosa tells the camera, “I’d like Johnny to come back,” in reference to FLFR firefighter John “Johnny”.
Chance Davis, an FLFR firefighter with two years of experience, said, “I’m sorry, I smell. I cooked dinner after my workout and the call was received, so that is probably the reason she wanted Johnny to return.”
Rosa is captured in a TikTok clip, gripping her hand and asking “Am I choke you?” A firefighter responded, “A tiny bit …”
“At first, she said, ‘Oh why don’t we just carry you?’ “We were just making a joke and thought, ‘Actually that is not a bad plan.’”
John “Johnny”, a veteran FLFR of 23 years, said, “She is a very light girl. We can carry her up without any problem.” Let’s do this.”
On Sunday evening, a burst water pipe on Rosa’s apartment block shut down all elevators. So firefighters had to carry her 31 floors. The fire cavalry helped her from the 31st floor apartment to the lifts that were working on the opposite side of the building. She is in a wheelchair.
FLFR Captain Mike Bloomberg said, “On this particular call all I did is carry her bag.”
They carried her and one person also carried the wheel chair. It was truly a team effort.
Davis said at the time: “I will get a recording for you, are you interested?” Cap responds, “I don’t.”
Two years ago, I had no idea what TikTok meant. It could have just been Tic Tac.
What’s happening? Then, the phone goes crazy. I receive all kinds of texts, including a video. “I couldn’t believe that it was actually happening.”
Rosa’s TikTok clip about her rescue from a high-rise building has been viewed by over 8,000,000 viewers. She went to the fire station on Wednesday in order to express her gratitude.
She said, “I could not have asked for better three to save the moment.”
