Cape businesses never shut down despite damage, a multitude of repairs that are now mostly complete and the flood.
After Hurricane Ian, a Cape Coral business that has been in operation for more than 50 years and provides service to the community when it is most needed is back up and running.
Fuller Metz Cremation & Funeral Services has reopened its doors after an almost Category 5 hurricane caused severe structural damage.
Although a funeral house never shuts down — and this one did — Timothy Hauck, the funeral director responsible for the building’s reconstruction said that it was a difficult road to get back to the condition of the building before the hurricane.
The main chapel and the funeral room were flooded due to severe damage on the roof and siding. Fuller Metz continued to provide services in the surrounding area through its other spaces at the venue. However, 15 months after the initial incident, it is important to be able to offer the grieving people the most comfortable environment possible.
Hauck expressed his satisfaction at the completion of the interior renovation. The event has been long and drawn out. Fortunately, we did not suffer the same damage as so many others. We still had some functionality. Our main chapel, however, was not in use. When our carport was removed, the entire side of the structure was exposed, compromising our main event space. The main chapel has been out-of-service.
The unfortunate thing was that our families were not able to utilize our large room. There are two rooms available, but one of them is just a wreck.
Fuller Metz was founded in 1967 by Don Metz as Metz Funeral Home in Cape Coral’s downtown on Lafayette Street. Fuller Metz was formed in 2010 when Metz Funeral Homes and Fuller Funeral homes were merged. The business is now located at 3740 Del Prado Boulevard.
Hauck stated that the roof was completely damaged, while the porte-cochere collapsed, leaving the entire south face of the building exposed to the elements. The columns at the front suffered damage from wind and will be replaced.
Fuller Metz’s team wasted no time in ensuring that the company could operate as funerals are a necessity.
Hauck stated, “We worked until 3 in the morning the day after the storm to transport deceased patients.” Our restoration team came out the following morning to help us get generators running. It’s a necessity that we prepare. We can’t shut down.”
Fuller Metz has just returned from a difficult and long journey, but not without improvement.
Hauck explained, “It is just a matter of continuing the repair on the exterior.” We took full advantage of this situation. The building was built in late 1960s and we were able to upgrade it and improve the interior appearance.
We know that many people lost their entire lives, and we are grateful to be able to function, even with our “small” issues. ‘”
The interior renovations include new flooring, paint, lighting and audio/video capability.
Fuller Metz has a great facility in terms of size and infrastructure. The facility can accommodate any funeral service or size of family. They offer services such as burial, cremation or returning the deceased to their homes. Pre-arrangement is a big part of their service, giving loved ones an added sense of security.
Hauck stated that even the strongest storm Southwest Florida has ever experienced could not stop the company from helping those who are in need.
Hauck stated, “We have always been part of our community and we are happy to remain a resource and support to the community.” We’re here for people to celebrate their lives, remember and pay tribute to the ones who have passed away.
