One marina located on Virginia’s Middle Peninsula suffered a partial roof collapse, which caused damage to boats and a second roof. Repairs are likely to take days and wind is believed to have been the culprit.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours on Saturday. National Weather Service Wakefield VA released a special statement on the weather for the entire area between Gloucester and Hartfield Virginia up until 3am. This warning advised that there would be winds of up to 40 miles an hour, and people should “seek refuge in a strong structure”.
Regatta Point Yachting Center in Broad Creek had a section of roof blow off from one pier, and land on the top of another. Deltaville Fire and Hartfield firefighters responded. They found structural collapse of the two piers.
Deltaville Fire Department refers to the incident as an “apparent wind event”. Several boat owners were on board their vessels at the time of the collapse.
Fire department officials report that one boat owner was evacuated off their vessel by a small, inflatable vessel. There were no reported injuries and only two piers sustained damage.
According to the Coast Guard, the Coast Guard has estimated that repairs and salvaging will last more than one week. As a result, some parts of Broad Creek are blocked. U.S. Coast Guard Mid-Atlantic states in an alert to mariners: “Salvage is underway and there are deck barges and cranes nearby. The red side of Broad Creek’s channel #10 will be limited to 15 foot width.”
It is anticipated that the work will be finished by Sept. 19, 2019. Meanwhile, boaters are advised to contact the salvage manager via VHF by dialing “SEAWARD 17.” The Coast Guard warns that boaters should use extreme caution in this area.
Deltaville Fire Department stated in a post on Facebook after all were safely rescued: “Strong effort by the responders. Regatta Point Management and Boat Owners.”
