A car that was involved in the crash on Sunshine Coast which resulted in death of a woman had been taken at gunpoint, according to police.
The police allege that a man aged 26 from Caloundra West took the Mercedes Benz from a Landsborough house at about 2am on Friday and then drove erratically.
According to police, the vehicle was travelling at high speed along the wrong side on Windsor Road at Burnside. It slammed a Nissan hatchback around 7:20am.
The female Nissan driver, 52 years old, was stuck in the vehicle. Paramedics
were unable to revive her.
The woman is thought to be an aged-care provider from Nambour, who has just returned home after a long night’s work.
According to police, the driver took off on foot and then tried to flee in another car.
The police reported that Good Samaritans had stopped the motorist from driving off.
Police searched the surrounding area, and arrested the suspect at a house nearby.
At the house where he had been arrested, police found a modified pistol and a Gel Blaster.
He is currently in custody, charged with numerous offences such as dangerous driving that caused death, while being adversely affected by alcohol or drugs, callous disregard for the deceased, armed theft, and possessing a firearm while drunk.
The Hervey Bay magistrates court will be holding a video-link hearing on Saturday.
Sunshine Coast Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield, a detective with the Sunshine Coast Police Department, praised those who tried to help the woman for their “absolutely heroic” actions.
The man said that “those people are capable of making the difference between death and life in such situations, and they have done their absolute best.”
“Unfortunately their efforts failed to keep the poor woman alive.”
Police want to know if anyone saw the car between five hours after the carjacking, and 27 kilometers away when the accident occurred.
The distance between the two places is quite large, and we ask our public members to cover this for us.
According to him, the man has “some connection” at the residence where he is arrested.
