An investigation is underway into a large fire that occurred at Chilliwack Church on Monday, just after 3pm. According to reports, the fire started in an attic area.
Chilliwack Fire Department reported that the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to reports about smoke near Williams Street & Princess Avenue.
According to the fire department, 54 firefighters attended the blaze. They were met with intense heat and thick smoke while trying to get into the building.
There is a serious fire at the Cross Connection Church on the corner of Williams Street & Princess Avenue, Chilliwack.
CFD issued a Tuesday statement that stated, “Due the rapidly deteriorating condition inside the building all firefighters were brought back. Defensive fire suppression operations using aerial master streams were then initiated.
According to the fire department, crews had a difficult time fighting fires because of heavy smoke and fire. “Several structural collapses”, as well as heavy smoke and fire, also hampered efforts.
A piece of heavy equipment arrived at the scene that evening in order to clear some of the collapse hazards, and start demolition work on parts of this building.
Fire department officials say that important documents were recovered and handed back to members of the congregation who had been at the incident.
It is noted that two firefighters were injured in minor ways while fighting the fire. There were no other injuries reported.
Chilliwack Fire investigators are now investigating the cause of this fire.
