CTV News featured a story earlier in the week about Dean and Lorrenda moving from Brooks, Alberta to Drumheller. Before the home was moved, nearly every square inch of it was vandalized, from the doors and windows to the furnace, air conditioner, and kitchen. Before the house was moved, people vandalized almost every square inch of it. This included windows and doors as well as kitchens, furnaces and air conditioners.
Dean Southern, his wife and their children had been having problems with their homeowners insurance. They thought that their movers would cover them. They soon discovered that the policy only covered vandalism afterward, and not before. The community came to the rescue and members of their church had been hard at work. When people work hard and are dedicated, they can accomplish a great deal in short order.
The glass has been removed and the windows have all been fixed. We are very grateful.
Dean said that after listening to their story, people offered help. We are thankful for the four volunteers who came out on Wednesday. Others will come this weekend.
Martin shares their hopes to continue rebuilding this house. They have worked with an interior designer in the area since before the vandalism. Martin shares their plans to work with Martin Interiors. We need to secure the home first, so we will focus on windows and doors after we have completed some demolition. Next week electrical will arrive, followed by HVAC and plumbing.
Friends have set up a Go Fund Me to assist the couple in rebuilding. As of Friday morning, the Go Fund Me had raised more than $34,000. Martin said that a local builder has offered assistance. One local contractor is handling the HVAC and plumbing, which he has offered to do very generously. That’s an excellent start. The team will be examining flooring, plumbing fixtures and drywall as well as interior doors.
The organizers plan to host a work party at the Cambria house on Saturday. Contact Sheila Martin, Martin Interiors 403-820-0224 to volunteer or contribute items or food for the Cambria home.
Drumheller, and its surrounding communities have been a great support to the family in the aftermath of this unfortunate setback.
Anyone who has information regarding the incident that occurred in Brooks, in June is encouraged to contact either the Brooks RCMP, or Crime Stoppers.
