The woman, who was 19 years old and drove through Corby’s residential streets without stopping for the police after she failed to do so when they asked her to do so has been given a 12-month driving ban with a suspension of sentence.

The Roads Policing Team of Northamptonshire Police spotted occupants in a silver VW Golf behaving suspiciously shortly after midnight, Monday 24 July. They followed the vehicle into the centre.

Jolene Crawford, the driver of the Golf, was driving towards Gainsborough Road via George Street when a second car pulled up and turned on the blue lights, sirens and other signals to signal to the driver that they should stop. Instead, she accelerated, and continued to drive at a high speed.

The officers continued to pursue Crawford, who drove dangerously in the wrong direction and at speeds exceeding 50mph on Cecil Drive.

Crawford crashed his car into the curb near the intersection of Burghley and Buckfast Squares, then rammed the police car in an attempt to escape.

Crawford, who was in the driver’s seat, was charged with dangerous driving and other charges. The passenger on the front seat fled. She has not been identified. The driver was charged with driving without insurance, dangerous driving, failure to stop at a signal, and driving in violation of a license.

Crawford of Rockingham Road in Corby pleaded guilty on Wednesday, October 17 at Northampton Crown Court to all the charges. He was sentenced for 12 months imprisonment, with a 24 month suspension.

The woman was ordered to perform 100 hours unpaid work and 30 days of rehabilitation activities. She is also disqualified from driving 12 months, must take an extended driving exam, as well as be placed on a 12-month driving ban.

The arresting officer, PC Chris Lock from the Roads Policing Team stated: “Jolene had a total disregard for her own safety and that of her passengers and innocent road users. It was by pure luck that nobody was hurt by her reckless driving.

The courts helped remove yet another reckless and illegal driver off our roads.

In 2022, tragically, 36 people who were involved in an accident on the road in Northamptonshire never made it home. The Northamptonshire Safer Roads Alliance and the Force are committed to reducing the number of fatalities or serious injuries on the roads.
