As Storm Elin passed through the North West, trees were blown down and power lines on rail networks exploded.

Video footage shows the wind damage in Stalybridge in Tameside. A car’s front and rear windows are smashed and its roof has collapsed after a tree was knocked down during the storm.

The tree that fell on Mottram Road has not been reported to have caused any injuries or damage.

Manchester Piccadilly suffered major disruptions after an overhead cable ‘exploded,’ during the storm.

The video was taken around 5:40pm by a passenger on the train in Piccadilly. It shows sparks and large flashes from overhead cables.

Railway bosses immediately confirmed that damage to overhead cables had occurred shortly after the video.

Now, it is believed that a tree fell and caused the accident.

Northern Rail has issued an ‘alert not to travel’ to all passengers because of’multiple incidents related to weather’. Services are likely to be affected until Sunday midday.

Metrolink trams in Manchester were also forced to stop when a “tarp” became stuck on overhead cables.

Shudehill Street and Market Street tram stops are closed while engineers and firefighters work to release the lines.

Merseyrail also experienced disruptions due to fallen trees, particularly in Kirkby and Freshfields.

A blockage on the tracks between Kirkdale and Ormskirk disrupts all lines. Trains may have to be rescheduled or cancelled as a result. The storm is predicted to continue until 11am.

Formby residents in Merseyside were without electricity for several hours following a massive power outage that affected the entire area around 5.30pm.
