Madison officials have ordered that extensive fire damage in a house be repaired within three months, after it has been neglected for over two years.

Officials from the Madison Fire Department said that four people managed to escape flames and smoke at 6314 Hartford Drive on May 17, 2021. MFD spokesperson Cynthia Schuster stated that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Schuster estimated the fire damage at $500,000.

Many of the damages are still visible today. City of Madison Building inspector Kyle Bunnow confirmed that a complaint was filed with the city about the condition of the house this summer.

A city inspection report dated earlier this month stated that “the front porch system is damaged. There are holes in the covers and it appears the roof has bent to one corner.” Damage along the roof, mostly in the area surrounding the roof of the second-level structure. The report states that siding is missing along large areas of the house: the front elevation and the right elevation.

The city officials gave the owner of the property until November 26th to fix urgent items.

Dane County Court Records show that the insurance company and the owner have been in dispute about the insurance coverage since last year.

In January of this year, Florida Judge Frank Remington awarded the homeowner $600,000 in judgment against American Strategic Insurance Corporation. Thomas Devine, ASIC’s lawyer, told 27 News that the company plans to appeal against the decision of the judge.

The homeowner refused to comment on 27 News through a representative. 27 News has not received a response from Joe Malone the homeowner’s lawyer.

Bunnow says it is important to repair fire damage.

Bunnow stated that they are important for the property value of neighbors.

Bunnow explained that if we notice that time, or in this instance years, has passed and no steps have been taken to fix the property we believe it is important to insist that they do so as to prevent further degradation.

According to the homeowner’s agent, he no longer lives at that property. The city records indicate that the property tax bill for the damaged home is sent to a different Madison address, with the property owner at this location sharing the same surname as the property owner in the fire.

Bunnow remembered another occasion from his professional career when an unrepaired Madison fire damaged property was left for a very long time. Bunnow stated that the house on this property had been demolished.

Bunnow stressed that it is important for no one to occupy the Hartford Drive home, which has been damaged by fire. Some exits have been boarded.
