On Friday afternoon, nine people were hurt when gas that had accumulated inside a sewerage pipe exploded. The explosion occurred in Lasbela. Three people among those injured are in critical condition.
The explosion caused cars and motorcycles to fly up like toys.
Unloading a truck in the air, it fell onto a car. The vehicles both suffered damages.
The roof of Nullah collapsed and the stalls of shops which had encroached upon the sewerage system fell into the gutter.
People were in a panic because they heard the explosion a mile away.
Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) began investigating the source of the blast. BDS confirmed in the following days that explosives had not been used.
Ambulances from the emergency services transported the injured to Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital. The condition of 3 people was critical and they had third-degree burns.
To facilitate rescue efforts, traffic police had one side blocked off. The Lasbela road, connecting South district to Central district, was closed because of an explosion. This caused a massive traffic jam.
K-Electric immediately sent a team to the site and cut off the light, saving lives. However, the pole-mounted power transformer suffered some damage.
To ensure that the rescue was not disrupted, traffic police officers closed off a street to all traffic. An eyewitness reported that a person was missing, and the rescue operation intensified to find them. However, none were found. According to the shopkeepers, there is a 500-metre sewer line. There were previously holes to allow gas to escape. But the shopkeepers built the new shops above the sewerage and there is no longer a way to do so.
They were worried that no one would help them recover losses. The Express Tribune reported that local residents said the shop stalls, and parts of them, destroyed by the explosion, were illegal encroachments. There was therefore no hope of receiving any assistance from the government.
The injured were Naseeruddin Arif Usman Khuram Laldin Muhammad Ejaz Hafeez Mansoor, and an unknown. According to doctors, three people with severe burns are currently in critical conditions. Lasbela was closed and there were long lines of vehicles.
