Roof damaged by storm; downed lines spark fire

Yesterday, strong winds caused chaos in Southland.

Yesterday morning, a thunderstorm swept through the city, destroying part of the roof of the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter, and knocking down an electrical line at Kennington. This caused a small area of brush to catch fire.

Simon King, NZAS External Relations New Zealand Director said that the damage done to the roof in Tiwai occurred early the next morning.

The roof of one our pitch tanks had its cladding removed and the materials blew off onto the land next to it.

He said that no staff was at risk and the containment system did not fail.

M King stated that the area was cordoned-off and damage assessments would take place when it is safe.

Yesterday, emergency services responded to Mill Rd South at 3.15pm, when a power line that had fallen remained active, sparking a small fire.

A fire engine and a fuel tanker were dispatched from Invercargill to the scene.

Alex Norris, the shift manager at the time said that a live cable fell across the road causing a small fire. The crew quickly put out the flames.

After a brief period, the fire department assisted with the isolation of the electricity and left the situation in the care of the local contractors.

PowerNet’s spokesperson stated that the likely cause of this failure was strong winds.

It appears that a line has failed and has contacted the earth, which caused grass to catch fire.
