Gilead, a small village of only 31 residents, is home to a family restaurant.
Storms that raged through the night on Friday caused significant damage at Pioneers Inn.
Karen Keilwitz said that she had been out for a walk when a friend asked if she could see the roof.
She said, “I looked here and thought, Oh my goodness, my god,'”.
The roof was almost completely ripped off by strong winds.
Keilwitz stated, “It’s unbelievable.” I just couldn’t accept it. “I think I was shocked all Saturday.”
The Keilwitz Family has owned Pioneer Inn for 37 years.
Karen and her family made many memories in this home.
She said, “It is my primary source of income.” It’s been like my child since I bought it.
Water damage has also affected the restaurant’s interior.
Keilwitz serves breakfast and lunch at the Town Hall across the street.
It’s like, “What am I going to do?” “What do I do now? Is this from God?” Do I have to maintain this establishment? “Am I expected to put in my all?”
Keilwitz says they are waiting to find out how much the repair will cost and whether her insurance covers it.
She wants to keep the building. It is more to her than just a small business.
It’s like a home away from your home. She said, “It’s a community.” It’s an important landmark. One of the oldest structures in Gilead still standing. It’s a shame to see this building crumble.
Keilwitz reported that at least twenty people showed up the day after the storm to clean as much debris as possible.
She said that despite the disappointment, finding community through the process of rebuilding is helping her to get through the difficult times.
