Durham County Fire Marshal investigates what caused the massive fire that broke out at an historic home near downtown on Fayetteville street Sunday evening.

Durham firefighters responded to a fire at the corner of Fayetteville Street and Linwood Ave. on Sunday night, around 9 pm. The fire officials stated that the majority of the fire occurred in the attic of the house.

The fire was brought under control in 15 minutes, but the damage caused by it is significant. This home, which was over a hundred years old, was being renovated.

Darryl Barrett who lived nearby was following the construction and said that it looked better as they built.

Barrett told CBS 17 that he witnessed the house burn.

Barrett stated that “when I was going to the shop last night there was nothing wrong but five minutes after I left the store, I saw big fires.”

The fire department reports that one firefighter received a minor injury. However, the burn was treated on the spot. When firefighters arrived, no one was in the house.
