The fire started early on Tuesday morning in Peachland. Three residents escaped safely, but they were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Peachland Fire Rescue reports that crews responded at 5:10 am to a fire reported on the deck of a home.
The first crews arrived to heavy smoke and blazing flames in the back of the home, said Dennis Craig from Peachland Fire Department. He noted that a smoke detector had woken the three.
The home also suffered some damage from fire. Later in the day, crews returned to the house to put out some hotspots on the roof.
Three residents who were initially hospitalized were later released. The firefighter who was exhausted was taken to hospital and released.
Investigations are still underway to determine the cause of this fire.
Global News reported that a witness said his dog’s barking woke him up.
He saw flames when he looked out. He went out to warn his neighbours who were also outside.
The chief of fire in Peachland said that residents need to check smoke alarms frequently, because you never know when one will be needed.
Craig said, “We urge everyone to regularly test their smoke detectors.” We just went back to the fallback time, so now is the perfect time to test your smoke alarms and batteries.
If possible, close your bedroom doors. This can prevent smoke from entering the room, causing damage and even injury.
Craig reminded homeowners to check their policies and renters that they should also have their own insurance.
