BogotaOn Tuesday afternoon, October 10, 2018, nearly 200 students of public universities in Bogota took to the streets to protest the student strike of 2018 and demand improved educational conditions at the universities.
The protesters began to move from Calle 16 and Carrera 51 at 4 pm towards the National Museum, on Carrera 7 and Calle 28, starting with Carrera 7. During this journey, vandalism was committed and commercial businesses were attacked.
Videos from Caracol Radio show how students wearing hoods broke windows at the Ciudad Universitaria and Concejo de Bogota station while spraying graffiti.
Four trunk buses also suffered graffiti, and their windows and doors were damaged. As the protestors were approaching the National Museum they destroyed the McDonald’s on the road, which was occupied by employees and diners. Hooded people broke windows and sprayed graffiti in some of the banks.
The disruption to the mobility of the corridor was severe. Hundreds of people had to leave their buses at the Transmilenio station and continue on foot. Around 5:45 pm, the Dorado trunk was operational.
The protest ended in front of the Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca, where students sang a symphony requesting that the government make changes to the proposed educational reform. In the last part of the day this area was guarded only by Bogota Police, and anti-riot group, but no further.
