Kathleen and Michael Lynch referred to as “family deeply embedded in our club and the community” by local GAA club

Kathleen Lynch (80) and Michael Lynch (53) are the names of the locals who named the two victims, a mother and her son, that perished in a fire at a home in Co Cavan early on Sunday.

According to the GAA local club, the family was “deeply rooted in our club and in our community” but it appears they were killed in the fire. Emergency services had been alerted shortly before 2am, Sunday.

Garda team investigated the scene at Lackenmore in a rural location between Ballyjamesduff Town and New Inn. Fire is suspected to have been started by accident

Firefighters arrived at the scene, extinguishing the fire. Ms Lynch was pronounced dead on scene, as were her and son. They were then taken to Cavan General Hospital’s mortuary, where they will undergo a postmortem.

Castlerahan GAA described the sad news on Sunday in its tribute.

Kathleen’s family is deeply rooted in our club, community and team. She has four grandson who played on winning teams last year. Her granddaughter was on the team of ladies that also won the championship. It said that her grandson Jamie O’Reilly was part of the u17 squad who were in final championship.

The newspaper continued to say that “her soup is legendary after her annual swim at Lacken Lake for Christmas… we send our condolences to… the entire extended family,” adding a one-minute silence would be observed in all of the games throughout the county this Sunday.

Trevor Smith, a Fine Gael local councillor in the area, described the deaths of two young men as “a terrible tragedy”. He said that the community’s “thoughts and prayer are with them and their families and friends during this trying time”.
