Gladys Jones, who has served in the National Guard for seven years, was surprised last week to learn that she would receive a free roof from a roofer, roofing suppliers and Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity.

The service was held at the Jones home located on Bigleaf Drive. It was sponsored by Habitat for Humanity.

Jones claimed that Dave Farris was not able to reach her when she first learned of her plans to replace her roof. The guys knocked at my door first, and told me they were bringing supplies to replace the roof.

“I did not want to shout, so I acted calm and replied, “Oh really?” When do you want us?

“As soon as I close the door, my cries are all over.”

The roof was original and not covered by her homeowner’s policy.

Jones did not have to pay a penny thanks to SRS Building Products and Texas Traditions Roofing. According to Bryan Chisholm of Texas Traditions Roofing, a roof replacement would cost Jones between $12,000-$15,000 for his house.

SRS Building Products Territory Manager Jeremy Cunningham stated that the organization he is employed by, Operation Raise a Roof Foundation allows them to donate.

I can’t express the admiration that I have for his company. “Our motto says ‘Make Money, Have Fun, and Give Back.'” We sell shingles all day, we install new roofs, but when you give them to someone in need and watch their joy, it really breaks the monotony.

Jones’s reaction was astonishment.

She said, “I’m just overjoyed.” She said, “That is all I have to say.”

SRS Building Products, according to Farris who is Habitat for Humanity Fort Hood Area’s Veteran Engagement Construction Resource Specialist, has the supplies for an deserving vet.

Farris explained that “we’re trying serve the veteran community so I went and inspected various roofing options for veterans to be eligible for and I saw this house had missing shingles and it was in a distressed state.”

Farris replied by asking Chisholm whether his crew would be able to finish the project before June ended.

Texas Traditions Roofing was founded in 2009 with a focus on helping others and tackling the work head-on.

He said, “We must take care of the communities we live in and our employees’ families.” We’re in business but we also care about our community. “You want to do what’s right and be a grassroots.”

Chisholm describes Habitat for Humanity as a “phenomenal” organization.

He said that we are fortunate to have the opportunity to serve and help them along this journey.
