Unattended turkey fryers exploded and destroyed a North Carolina home, ruining a family’s Thanksgiving.
Burlington Police reported that the explosion occurred last week, when the person who was cooking turkey fell asleep and the hot oil boiled away.
Burlington police chief Daniel Shoffner said to WAVY, that when the tank of propane fueling the hot fryer exploded it blew out all the windows at the back of house. It also caused fire damage on the roof and walls.
The Burlington Fire Department reported that when firefighters arrived just before midnight, they found heavy smoke and flames engulfing both the side and back of the home.
The fire was completely extinguished after a half-hour of fighting the flames.
The blast was fortunately not serious and the dog of the family was rescued safely from their home.
It was the cat that escaped by herself.
The explosion caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the house and $50,000 to personal belongings.
Shoffner stated that attaching the propane tank to the oil boiling was “a dangerous” act.
He said that “that [explosions] could happen” if the fire heated it to such a degree.
Cooking accidents tend to be more frequent around holidays, according to Mr Shoffner.
According to Mr Shoffner, WAVY, “there are more fires in houses due unattended cooking or incidents of cooking on Thanksgiving Day than any other holiday.”
He said, “We want everyone to stay safe during the holiday season.” You know, you should be careful when cooking. You should not use a turkey-fryer that contains oil, or any other liquid.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, turkey fryers cause, on average 60 injuries and five fatalities each year, as well as around $15m of property damage in the US.
Officials urge families to use their turkey fryers outdoors, away from trees or other structures. They should never be left unattended.
