Amazon screens items in 12 warehouses for damage using artificial intelligence before shipping. This will decrease the amount of damaged goods being shipped out and increase picking and packing speed.

During the order pick-up process, warehouse employees check for signs of wear. Amazon Robotics Director of Applied Science, Jeremy Wyatt says it takes a little while to inspect items for damage because they are usually in good shape. “That is cognitively demanding, because you are looking for something unique and it’s not your primary duty.”

The number per 1,000 of damaged items is less that one.

As it struggles to hire workers, the company recently automated warehouses. The company processes about 8 billion parcels a year. This means that the total number of damaged items is high. The company has added robots to their warehouses in America as they struggle to find workers.

Amazon will roll out its system to 12 locations across the US, Europe and Asia.

Amazon has now implemented the AI system at 10 fulfillment centers across North America and Europe. Amazon says that AI is three-times more efficient than warehouse workers at identifying damages.

Picking involves checking items

During the pick-and-pack process, the AI learns to differentiate between undamaged and damage items. This allows it to flag items that may not be perfect.

A worker will inspect an item that’s broken.

Each order will be picked up and put into bins. The bins will then be checked for the right products after they have passed the imaging station. The bins will be checked again for any damages. The bin will be picked up by a worker if it is damaged.
