Linda McCarthy, CEO of Planned Parenthood, said that a person who was thought to be homeless, had been arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, Nov. 8 after starting a “unintentional fire” outside Planned Parenthood’s entrance. The incident caused only minor damage.
She said that the health center at 1530 Ellis St. is currently open to patients and treating them as usual.
McCarthy stated, “We are aware that there was no malicious intent.” Our staff is resilient and responding. The volunteers are on the move. The patients are seen. “The doors are open and we’re there.”
Fire crews in Bellingham responded to fire alarms around 4:00 am on Wednesday. They found the entryway to be ablaze when they arrived, according Fire Captain Dustin Michaelis.
Investigators found that a bench caught fire and then spread the flames to the entry door, the ceiling and exterior of the building. Megan Peters, Bellingham Police spokesperson, said that the fire caused damage to walls, ceilings, security cameras and lamps.
Michaelis stated that the fire had been quickly extinguished and the smoke inside the building was only minor.
Peters reported that police found a man under a cover with a lighter, near the rear door of the structure. The man was seen on surveillance footage shoving paper under the building’s back door and trying to ignite it.
The fire was estimated to have caused property damages of more than $7500 by investigators. There were no injuries.
According to booking records online, the person suspected of starting the fire has been booked in Whatcom County Jail on suspicions of second-degree arson, and first-degree malicious damage.
